off Topic - bad DEET reaction?

Post by CrazyPete on Mon 23 Feb 2015, 8:03 am

Has anybody had a really bad allergic reaction to DEET based repellent, last 2 days have been shear hell, massive reaction, inc nearly closed eyes from swelling and burning itching all over sprayed areas only. Been to same patch heaps without trubs using horse bum cream with no probs. 1st time I've used DEET and Bam! I'm a mess

Yeah mate not as bad as your reaction though. I used the extra 40% stuff. Mine looked like I had slight chemical burns on face. It also ate through the plastics on my inner headset lining with prolonged use. Never again

Yep, like severe sunburn, used it once years ago and never again.
Natural horse cream the way to go.

ive never had an issue with it but it seems a lot have.
Might have to consider changing??

Psychological Effects in Adults

The two recorded cases of dermal DEET exposure resulting in psychological effects involve males 27 and 30 years old. In one case the 27-year-old applied Deep Woods Off! (20% DEET) while fishing on a humid afternoon. The man experienced an altered mental state and paresthesias, which progressed to auditory hallucinations and severe agitation. He was heavily sedated when he arrived at the hospital and required mechanical ventilation. After 24 hours, his condition had improved and he was discharged after 3 days with no recurring symptoms (Hampers et al. 1999).

G'day Anthony

Yeah mate once i read the product info sheet i was blown away by it's toxicity.
Causes Stroke and convulsive fits in humans and melts plastic like acetone does.
Worse thing is we are due to go back up there tomorrow when it's a lovely cool 22c day but i reckon it could be a no-go now, might have to hit the Silvers for a while. or maybe scratch  Naaaa play it safe i reckon haha
Should have to have a pesticide ticket to buy the crap.

Used some of the bushman's repellent last year because of the midges, with deet in it, and immediately stopped using it when I saw that because I had residue of it on my hands after applying it, it started to make the rubber handgrips become "tacky" on the postie bike. Suspect

I thought to myself at the time that if it was doing that to the rubber its probably not the best stuff to be putting on your skin, also experienced a little eye soreness as well, didn't relate that to the deet at the time but maybe it was from rubbing sweat off my forehead with my hands and then some of the cream being carried in the sweat into my eyes.

Best avoided I would say.

Used to use Deet in Canada out bush for the Black Flies and Mosquitos. Touched my camera after putting it on my hands and my finger print was permanently etched into it, by the end of the week the camo coating on my bow handle was down to bare metal.
Mates eyes also swelled closed for a day or two, got to be a problem him groping around for things, especially at night in the tent. affraid
